How’d I Do on This Year’s Oscars?

With this year’s Academy Awards ceremony behind us, it’s time to take a look at how I did on my predictions for the winners in this annual competition, as first outlined in my previous blog, Who Will Capture This Year’s Oscars. And the result? A perfect score! Out of the six major categories, I got them all!Best PictureProjected Winner: “12 Years a Slave”Actual Winner: “12 Years a Slave”Result: Correct callThis was the only major category that had any significant suspense associated with it, though “12 Years a Slave” was clearly one of the two frontrunners (the other being “American Hustle,” which, regrettably, was completely shut out on its 10 nominations). But, even though the film’s win wasn’t a surprise, it was [...]

Who Will Capture This Year’s Oscars?

It’s that time of year again – time for my predictions of the winners at the annual Academy Awards. Most of the major honors appear fairly clear-cut at this point, but, even with that said, here are my predictions for who will take home statues this year:Best ActorThe Field: Christian Bale, “American Hustle”; Bruce Dern, “Nebraska”; Leonardo DiCaprio, “The Wolf of Wall Street”; Chiwetel Ejiofor, “12 Years a Slave”; Matthew McConaughey, “Dallas Buyers Club”Who Will Likely Win: Matthew McConaughey. McConaughey has a virtual lock in this category at this point. Having previously won the Golden Globe, Critics Choice and Screen Actors Guild Awards for best actor, there’s no reason to believe he’ll falter at the Oscars.Who Should Win: Matthew McConaughey. [...]

‘Her’ pushes the limits of human connection

“Her” (2013). Cast: Joaquin Phoenix, Scarlett Johansson (voice), Amy Adams, Rooney Mara, Brian Cox (voice), Olivia Wilde, Matt Letscher, Chris Pratt, Laura Kai Chen, Kristen Wiig (voice). Director: Spike Jonze. Screenplay: Spike Jonze. Web site. Trailer. What makes a good relationship? That’s a question mankind has wrestled with for ages (or at least ever since Woody Allen started making movies), but the answer has always seemed to elude us, shifting like an ever-moving target. And the clarity we seek on this point may be even harder to come by with the release of the latest offering from director Spike Jonze, the romantic comedy-drama, “Her.”Theodore Twombly (Joaquin Phoenix) leads a pretty isolated life in the Los Angeles of the near future. In [...]

‘The Hunt’ examines the persistence of beliefs

“The Hunt” (“Jagten”) (2012 production, 2013 release). Cast: Mads Mikkelsen, Thomas Bo Larsen, Anne Louise Hassing, Annika Wedderkopp, Lasse Fogelstrøm, Susse Wold, Lars Ranthe, Alexandra Rapaport, Sebastian Bull Sarning, Bjarne Henriksen. Director: Thomas Vinterberg. Screenplay: Tobias Lindholm and Thomas Vinterberg. Web site. Trailer. In an age when so many aspects of life seem so inherently transient, it’s hard to fathom how some can persist with dogged determination. This can be particularly maddening when it comes to those we’d rather rid ourselves of, yet they’re almost always the ones that endure the longest. When such circumstances arise, there’s usually some kind of life lesson involved, one that we’d be wise to address, a point driven home in a poignant drama from Denmark, [...]
